crossing streets

Moderate sized intersection.

Crossing at the end of the green

You know

Still green but almost not

Like that

And in the other direction

through the tail of the red

You know

Still red but almost not

like that

and these two bikes

pass me by

Close but not really

A generous almost

But still

You know

like that

And just for an instant

It occurs to me,

not in a malicious, angry, spiteful sort of way but rather in a cartoonish way, the sort of way, where it's funny when someone falls but only if they don't get hurt sort of way,

That there was one moment there

Where I could have reached out

Two hands and a firm push

Bike to bike dominos

The perfect mouse trap.

Cue the sound fx

The canned laughter.

The applause.

In that world

I get hit by a bus.

Freeze frame. Credits roll. Music.

Black out on me

Flattened pancake style

On a chrome bus grill.

leaking my just desserts.
